Avoiding the creation of a grain while making slabs is easy and quite straight forward. It is also helpful to flip a slab over and roll it on both sides rather than just one.

First roll out the ceramic. Clay should be very uniform. Sort of like a sandwich i have followed this many times while making tiles coasters or murals and got good results. Keep pieces away from the edge of the kiln.
